EXPEDITION LOG: New Year’s Eve,
2004
Legend told us of the existence of a
"Lost Amazon City” with exotic flowers and
luxuriant foliage. We heard of a sleek cat, with hypnotic
eyes, stalking beneath a jungle canopy near the waterfall.
There was talk of brilliant butterflies and birds
taking
to the wing in a shimmer of iridescent color, and stories
of somber lizards and creeping things retiring ever
deeper into the shadows.
“It’s this way,” someone said. Excitement
filled the air. A sudden distant howl of a predator
interrupted the incessant buzz and hum of insects. The
hairs on my arms stood at attention. We were close.
We were very close.
Two gigantic 12’ tall Atlante idles
guarded the entrance - a stone archway surrounded by
swirling vines and plants.
The grand doors swung open.
And there it was - a lost city deep in
the jungle. Songs of exotic birds rang through the trees.
Lush greenery. Gorgeous décor. A group of 500
of the most beautiful guests these eyes had ever seen.
We turned the corner, and were welcomed
by huge Olmec Heads covered by overgrown greenery, glowing
with rustic candles. Throughout the room - fresh bamboo,
wild orchids, and a variety of tropical foliage. Brightly
colored table linens covered the tables, giving us a
chance to rest our weary feet.
As we entered the main tent, the extravagant
setting overwhelmed us. A waterfall and pond
with fresh exotic flowers and vines. I about jumped
out of my skin when I saw the alligator peeking out
from the waterfall. Over to the side, a jaguar was
eyeing
its prey, ready to pounce.
We witnessed an amazing flowing volcano
with glowing lava and flickering fire. We barely missed
the huge anaconda, which hung from a low tree surrounded
with greenery and stones. Peruvian butterflies fluttered
about, landing their delicate wings on virtually
everything we encountered.
It was here, in the tent, where we spent
most of the night. A stage was set up through the
foliage. A stone wall ran across the front. We called
it “The Lost Temple.” Bands played there
throughout the night. Guests were enchanted by the
sultry
rhythms, amazed by the tropical décor. We all
danced for hours, never wanting it to end.
The Lost Amazon City was a true
spectacle. One that was intoxicating to all the senses.
One that lived up to its own legend.
